Guest Post: Sacred Marriage Book Review

“Marriage requires a radical commitment to love our spouses as they are, while longing for them to become what they are not yet. Every marriage moves either toward enhancing one another’s glory or toward degrading each other.”
– Dan Allender and Tremper Longman III

I recently read “Sacred Marriage” by Gary Thomas, a bestselling author and international speaker whose ministry brings people closer to Christ and closer to others. It was a wedding gift from the pastor who officiated our wedding ceremony… that I just now finished a year and some-odd days later… and I can honestly say that I wish that I had read it sooner!

Marriage is tough y’all. Let’s be real. Especially when the world is constantly telling you that if you’re not head-over-heels happy all of the time, you’re not doing it right.

One of the hardest things for me to do is exactly what that quote says; loving Christopher as he is while he becomes what he isn’t yet, seems near impossible for me sometimes. I often have these expectations and desires for him to do, and when they aren’t fulfilled I feel like he’s not doing what he is supposed to, or not holding up his end of the bargain.
But he’s the same person that I married over a year ago, so why should I expect him to be any different? In Sacred Marriage, Thomas repeatedly talks about how we often have this worldly view of love and marriage, and how it clouds our minds and hearts in our relationships.

The book is broken up into thirteen chapters, each with an important lesson on how to love your spouse the way God intended you to.

I love this book because he writes an almost step-by-step process of how to look at and understand the sacred institution of marriage through a biblical and godly lens, and then how to apply that godly love to your spouse.

This book made me truly look critically at myself, and how I view love and marriage; and changed how I feel about almost all of it.

I would highly suggest this book for anyone who is engaged, or even already married, because it will change how you love your spouse and your relationship with God as well!
